McLead Watershed District

The McLead Watershed District is a Political Subdivision of the State of New Mexico established to protect, operate, maintain, and finance the flood-control and watershed infrastructure within the McLead Watershed, protecting downstream people, property, agricultural lands, and natural resources from flooding, erosion, and sediment damage.

Located within the Caballo Soil and Water Conservation District, the McLead Watershed District is governed by its own board of supervisors, comprised of five board members appointed by the Caballo Soil and Water Conservation District.

The Caballo Soil and Water Conservation District's role as the parent conservation district is to appoint the McLead Watershed District Board, provide administrative, financial, and technical support, prepare and submit budgets and financial reports to the Department of Finance and Administration (DFA), coordinate with state and federal partners, and assist in maintaining and rehabilitating watershed projects, while the McLead Watershed District remains the separate entity responsible for owning and operating the watershed infrastructure
