About the Caballo SWCD
Our Purpose
The purpose of the Caballo Soil and Water Conservation District is to promote the sustainable use and management of soil, water, and air resources within its jurisdiction. This involves providing education, technical assistance, and resources to landowners and the community to address issues such as soil erosion, water quality, and conservation practices. The district aims to enhance environmental health, support agricultural productivity, and ensure the long-term stewardship of natural resources for future generations.

Outstanding District Conservationist Award
Slim Whitlock
This award is dedicated to Slim Whitlock, whose legacy continues to inspire us. Slim was a former supervisor for Caballo SWCD and dedicated many years to the board. He served as a vital liaison between the district and the Village of Hatch, where he was also Mayor. His instrumental role in passing the mil levy for dam maintenance in the Hatch Valley exemplifies his commitment to the community. Slim's warm spirit, as he never met a stranger, brightened the lives of many. Though he is no longer with us, his light continues to shine in our hearts.

Recognition for Years of Service
Harvey Morrow
This fall, Harvey celebrated 30 years of service as a supervisor on the Caballo Soil and Water Conservation District.
Although he is currently the Chairman, he has served in various roles on the board and is always seeking ways to enhance conservation efforts throughout the district. In addition to his work on the board, Harvey is a producer in the Uvas Valley, where he grows exceptional watermelons and pinto beans.
Outstanding Land Stewardship Award
Ronnie Garay
Ronnie Garay is a man of many hats, and recently honored with the role of board supervisor this October. His unwavering dedication to experimenting with soil health on his small pecan orchard outside of Garfield, New Mexico, has already earned him a nomination for a prestigious award. From utilizing red worm castings to exploring innovative methods for removing sodium chloride from water, Ronnie tirelessly strives to enhance soil conditions for the Hatch Valley Farmers, embodying the spirit of determination and innovation in agricultural practices.
